Carl Sagan’s belief system had a supposedly ‘beneficial effects’ on UFO studies.
Researchers were now divided into two categories:

A: Serious UAP researchers who set themselves the goal of identifying and cataloging UFOs, with the main focus on the assumption that there can be no extraterrestrial UFOs, which is why all sightings must have a banal explanation.
B: Marginalized Fringe UFO researchers who wanted to research the possibly extraterrestrial origins of UFOs and their aliens. This does not mean that these researchers easily fell for every UFO hoax.

The dichotomy between ‘serious’ vs ‘fringe’ expresses itself today in the naming of ‘UAP’ vs ‘UFO’. Both terms mean the same, but researchers who fear for their reputation are more likely the use the ‘Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon’ moniker.
